Where is My Tax Return? A Common Question Taxpayers Need the Answer ToMillions of people living and working within the United States rely on their federal and state tax refunds to help ease their financial struggles each year. Most of us, whether working for an employer who withholds our taxes for us or saving back our own taxes quarterly if self employed, are going to be due at least some money in refunds. Since this is our own money we will always want to do what we can to ensure that get back what we are owed each year. Of course, this means that you will need to know the status of your tax return to ensure that your refund is handled properly. Each year, plenty of us end up wondering where is my tax return? Fortunately, these days it is easier than ever to discover the status of your return through electronic means. However, you can get the same information about your tax return if you chose to file the old fashioned way with paper forms you send through the mail. No matter which way you have chosen to file, you can check with the IRS by visiting their online site which has a handy tool built into the site that can help you determine your return's status. First, though, you will need to have the information handy from your federal return. This means your Social Security number, the exact amount of refund from the return you filed either electronically or through the mail, and which status you filed under, such as Single, Married and Filing Jointly, Head of Household, etc. Once you have this information then you can check the status of your return in order to find out if it is being is being processed or if your refund check has been mailed or direct deposited. For those using the mailing method of filing, you may also get a notice that the IRS does not have your current address and if this is the case you will want to provide them with that information as quickly as possible. By using the e-filing method for your taxes you actually get a notification from the IRS within 72 hours to inform you that your return is being processed. If using the mail system then you must wait three to four weeks before that information will be available online. |
